That Russian Animation collection is pretty good. Depressing, but very interesting, especially when you consider the risk of persecution the artists faced for creating some of those. My girlfriend and I sometimes quote the "Mountain of Dinosaurs" bit about the eggs shells growing thicker -- such barbed commentary, and so incredibly sad!
Oh my god I know! It was so depressing when they wanted to get out and the eggs kept talking to them holding them back it made me feel anxious. I have only seen Disc 1 of that collection I think there's 4, Netflix only has 3 which I will watch soon since I started this whole "1 film a day" thing
I think I rented the Russian animation collection from I <3 Video (if that doesn't give it away -- yep, I'm from Austin :) Their Airport blvd store has a hefty collection of animation, including a lot of good stuff on VHS that hasn't yet seen its way to DVD or YouTube...
I saw Prince Achmed at the Drafthouse a few years ago with the live score by Brown Whörnet, and it was awesome. I even bought the DVD that they put together (yay for public domain video!) Did you go this weekend? I wonder how Many Birthdays' score compared to Brown Whörnet's!
